Habitat restoration though would mean, that humans have to keep away from large areas, which will not happen.

Imperial news:
Some basic facts first: US population is 4.38 percent of the total world population but nevertheless creates half of the globe’s solid waste. US congress just authorized the Department of Defense to spend 618 billion dollars in 2017, with more to come in future authorizations for next year.

News from cat land

Just as everybody was wondering if there ever will be a winter like the one depicted in old paintings, showing snow covered roads and roofs, icicles, and snowmen, it started snowing and it continued snowing. It is still snowing and both garden and forest are blanketed with a layer of snow which is at least 30 centimeters thick.

Two times a day I need to remove the snow from the canopy which I have attached to the old tool shed and also from the roof panels of the green houses because the heavy load of snow could break them. I also have to shovel away the snow from the AC power outlets in the garden. They are waterproof with a cover but that doesn’t help when the snow reaches them.

Though I could hardly open the garden door and the snow was so high that it even seeped into my boots I made a short walk into the forest with Linda and Lucia, plowing a furrow in the snow with the boots in which they could move forward like in a defile and follow me. They were excited first but soon got tired. After ten minutes we had to turn and go back to the house.

When we reached the entrance door again I discovered that the cat flap was broken. In the night it had probably been blocked by ice and when one of my little friends wanted to go out and pushed it open it broke. This cat flap has lasted for ten years and considering the fact that it is used a hundred times a day this is a good record.

Fortunately I have long time ago bought a second cat flap of the same kind and only had to fetch it from the cellar, unscrew and remove the broken one, and screw on the new one. The newly mounted flap unfortunately rubbed at the right sidewall of the door opening, so I had to rasp away a little bit on the side to make it open smoothly, but that didn’t take more than two minutes.

All the needed tools were at hand, I didn’t have to search or ponder how to proceed, the whole operation didn’t last more than 20 minutes. This is the advantage of an organized household.

News about travel chaos in Europe and multiple death are just in. I wonder how homeless people are faring? As flat roof snow usually is about 70 percent of ground snow it seems to be good advice to avoid supermarkets and shopping malls (this is good advice at any time, according to the anti-consumerism guerrilla).

Increased heating, traffic accidents, collapsed flat roof buildings, and well booked Alpine ski resorts will boost GDP numbers, so win-win, the economy is fine.

Many pests, especially slugs, lice, ticks, will be decimated by the cold weather, which is good. I fear for the hedgehogs, frogs, and toads, who are now buried in their hideouts under a thick layer of snow.

Global warming is no worry at the moment, lets celebrate the cold days!
