News, insights, opinions November 25 2021

Even the WHO (World Health Organization), who demonstrated its utter incompetence various  times since the start of the pandemic — for instance denying that aerosol transmission is the main way of COVID-19 infection — had to admit:

Vaccines reduce COVID-19 transmission by a mere 40 percent.

"We're concerned about the false sense of security that vaccines have ended the pandemic and people who are vaccinated do not need to take any other precautions," WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters.

"Data suggests that before the arrival of the Delta variant, vaccines reduced transmission by about 60 percent. With Delta, that has dropped to about 40 percent."

"If you are vaccinated, you have a much lower risk of severe disease and death but you are still at risk of being infected and infecting others.”

We cannot say this clearly enough: even if you are vaccinated, continue to take precautions to prevent becoming infected yourself, and infecting someone else who could die."

That means wearing a face mask, maintaining distance, avoiding crowds, and meeting others outside or only in a well-ventilated indoor space.”

COVID deniers, some anti-vaxxers, and most conspiracy theorists will reject this statement, while  most politicians will ignore it, avoid discussing it, try to bury it among other news. The politicians (at least the brighter ones) know that this is explosive, that this invalidates their declared goal of a transition to an endemic state, that the hope of vaccinations as a panacea goes up in smoke, and that a return to the old normal is impossible.

Politicians (at least the brighter ones) know, that travel must be reduced or superseded by digital communication; that tourism industry, airlines, and cruise lines will have to close shop; that global supply chains need to be shortened or replaced by local production; that parades, rallies, sport events, concerts, and other crowded spectacles must be banned.

These are unpopular measures, and people will claim vehemently their god-given right to get infected, suffer from long COVID for the rest of their lives, and infect others. If authorities really would go this route, there would be protests, revolts, looting, arson, lynchings, chaos and anarchy.

No politician could survive the backlash to such harsh measures, and in addition to that realization and just for good measure industry bosses will disburse lavish bribes in order to stop such plans once and for all.

These measure would also violate the religious postulates of permanent GDP growth, happiness through consumerism, ferocious free market competition (dog-eat-dog), and untouchable property rights.

So, most probably just like in a Greek tragedy the story will head to a dark and painful end with confusion and disorder, with millions more dying or being incapacitated, with collapsing societies and failed states.

In the epic war between humanity and nature humans have won many victories, destroying vital habitats, poisoning air, water, and soil, and causing a mass extinction of wildlife. They were jubilant, as the final victory, the irreversible destruction of the natural word, seemed to be near.

And yet, there are writings on the wall, and the pandemic is one of these writings, that humans were too confident, that their triumphalism and jubilation was unjustified. Just like in a Greek tragedy, just like in the Peloponnesian War, narrated by Thucydides, where Athens after many victories finally lost to Sparta, the story could end with a surprising twist and a bitter defeat.

Maybe this time nature will win.

Fewer than 6 percent of people in Africa are vaccinated, and yet, the WHO has described Africa regularly as “one of the least affected regions in the world” in its weekly pandemic reports.

Some researchers say the continent’s younger population -- the average age is 20 versus about 43 in Western Europe — in addition to their lower rates of urbanization and a tendency to spend time outdoors, may have spared it the devastating coronavirus waves Europe experiences at the moment. Several studies are probing whether there might be other explanations, including genetic reasons or past infection with parasitic diseases.

Japan reported no daily deaths from COVID-19 for the first time in 15 months, as infections decline rapidly in the country. When cases started falling in September, experts attributed the decline to vaccination progress as well as widespread mask wearing and reduced nightlife activities.

It may have been, that people changed their behavior and took a stricter approach to anti-infection measures when they saw how hospitals were overwhelmed and heard reports of infected people dying at home.

Despite a low double vaccination rate, COVID cases in India are decreasing. Even the festive season (Diwali) did not lead to any surges and the prediction of a third wave during October–November was not right.

Asia-Pacific countries are sticking to tight border controls, dampening prospects for a revival of the region’s pandemic-battered travel industry. Australia, where about 70 percent of the population is double-vaccinated, has indicated that international tourists won’t return until sometime next year.

Malaysia, where 77 percent of residents are double-jabbed, remains largely closed to international arrivals, with plans to begin accepting international tourists by January.

While China and Hong Kong become more isolated under a strict “zero COVID” policy that mandates up to four weeks of hotel quarantine, countries such as Japan, South Korea, Australia, Singapore, and Malaysia try pandemic mitigation efforts under which non-essential travel remains tightly restricted.

A few Southeast Asian nations discuss VTL (vaccinated travel lane, also called safe travel bubble) agreements. Singapores unilateral VTL with Indonesia and a Singapore-Malaysia land VTL, using designated bus services and trains, will take effect on Nov 29. A VTL between Singapore and India is expected to be launched at the same date.

Fully vaccinated visitors will be able to enter New Zealand from 30 April, but will have to self-isolate for seven days upon arrival as well as undergo tests on entry and departure. Vaccinated New Zealanders will be allowed to travel home from January 16, under similar rules.

French pharmaceutical company Valneva has developed a vaccine with a difference. Rather than induce an immune response that targets just the spike protein of the coronavirus, the Valneva vaccine, also known as VLA2001, stimulates an immune response to the entire virus by taking the whole of the coronavirus and inactivating it so that it can no longer cause illness. It then combines with an adjuvant, a substance that helps it enter human cells effectively.

The advantage of this method is that should any mutations on the spike protein arise that render it unrecognizable to other vaccines, the Valenva-induced immune response is broad enough to be able to recognize other parts of the virus so the immune reaction will still be effective.

The new Novavax vaccine is a protein subunit vaccine, containing the spike proteins that cover the virus’s surface and which the immune system can easily recognize. The spike proteins are grown within moth cells, then purified and added to an adjuvant, made from a soapbark tree extract, which enhances the immune response. Vaccines against papillomavirus and hepatitis B, regarded as safe and effective, use similar methods. A trial investigating the use of Novavax as a booster suggests it is highly effective at generating antibodies, including against delta.

The UK’s MHRA approved the use of the antiviral oral drug, molnupiravir. It said it was safe and effective at reducing the risk of hospitalization and death by around 50 percent in those with mild to moderate COVID-19, who may have one or more risk factors (obesity, older age, diabetes mellitus, heart disease) for developing severe disease. The drug works by reducing viral replication and onward transmission. It is most effective when taken during the early stages of infection. The MHRA recommends its use as soon as possible following a positive COVID-19 test and within five days of the onset of symptoms. The USA will buy 3.1 million courses of molnupiravir.

Pfizer’s antiviral drug paxlovid reduces the risk of hospitalization or death by 89 percent, according to trial data. Pfizer seeks emergency authorization and the US administration intends to purchase 10 million courses of paxlovid for 5.3 billion US$. Officials see the Pfizer and Merck pills as potential game-changers to help tame the pandemic by reducing hospitalizations and deaths.

China is on track to approve its first drug for Covid-19 within weeks. Conditional approval may be given to a neutralizing monoclonal antibody treatment co-developed by Chinese and US researchers. An efficient treatment for the disease is crucial for the country with a zero-tolerance strategy before it can consider reopening its borders, even as vaccination remains a priority.

AstraZeneca claims that its preventative antibody cocktail offers 83 percent protection against symptomatic Covid-19 for at least six months. The drug is created using a combination of two antibodies originating from immune B-cells donated by recovering Covid-19 patients. The treatment could be used in people who are known not to respond well to vaccines, such as cancer patients. Around 2 percent of people are considered to be at risk of not creating enough antibodies following the administration of a Covid-19 vaccine.

The US-based NIAID (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) has found giving the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine as a nasal spray reduced viral shedding in animal trials. Nasal vaccines have several advantages, among them the option of self administration and an immediate activation of the immune system. Many bacteria that affect the respiratory system are breathed in, so the lining of the nasal passage and the airways are packed with immune cells to protect us from invading germs.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he has been given a new COVID-19 nasal vaccine, administered through the nose without a needle, as part of his re-immunization. “They asked me to breathe in deeply and count to three,” Putin said, adding that he didn’t feel anything during the process. “Six months after my vaccination, my antibody levels dropped and experts recommended a revaccination process.”

The GSK-Vir Biotechnology's COVID-19 antibody treatment xevudy received US approval for emergency use in mild or moderate coronavirus cases. The EMA (European Medicines Agency) hopes to reach a verdict in two month time.

News, insights, opinions November 16, 2021

The argument goes: We need economic growth to let poorer nations and disadvantaged populations catch up, thereby alleviating inequality between nations and people.

Objection: But economic growth makes it impossible to reduce greenhouse gases, stop the poisoning of the biosphere, and reverse habitat destruction.

Question: How can one stop GDP growth and nevertheless reduce inequality?

Answer: Rich nations and people must share their wealth and distribute it to the poor ones.

Objection: But that is impossible, the rich will not give up one penny and they will block any redistribution schemes. They control the governments.

Conclusion A: So let’s destroy the world.

Conclusion B: Or start a revolution.

Changing course will be difficult, because in the past decades Western culture has undergone a remarkable transformation. For one, a rise in economic liberalism and free-market capitalism has encouraged an environment of competitive individualism. Secondly, social media emerged and grew rapidly, along with smartphone technology. Studies suggest these changes have led to generational differences in personality, including rises in narcissism, self-esteem, self-focus, and materialism. Heightened educational and job pressure, a more hectic environment, and decreased family stability may also have contributed to these changes in the social climate.

Black Friday (11.26), Cyber Monday (11.29), Single’s Day (11.11), and 10.10 sales are a symptom of the disease of mindless consumerism. Big sales events may excite shoppers and net billions in profits for online retailers but if we don’t stop this insatiable need to consume, all of us are in trouble.

The aim of business is to make money and online shopping platforms will do whatever they can to drive up sales and increase market share. More shopping and buying is good for the bottom line and it pays for thousands of jobs. But the exponential growth of online shopping on the back of a new age of mindless buying comes at a huge expense to the planet and we have already started to pay for it.

Powered by surging emissions from natural gas and coal, global greenhouse gas pollution has almost completely rebounded from pandemic lows, scientists reported Wednesday. The research shows that countries have powered their economic recoveries largely with fossil fuels, leaving humanity with room to emit just 420 gigatons of additional carbon dioxide before the world exceeds an important threshold for catastrophic warming.

==========

An Australian man has set an ambitious target to reduce his alcohol consumption by 68 percent within the next 20 years, as part of an impressive plan to improve his health. With a record of domestic violence, he also pledges to beat up his wife from now on only twice a week and maybe phase out (phase down) beatings completely (partly) till 2040.

The climate summit in Glasgow was a failure. Everybody says that, UN officials, renowned scientists, delegates of poor or severely affected nations, and activists. Now it is time for the blame game. Who is responsible? China, India, Russia, the USA, the EU? All of them — everyone?

COP26 was a failure, but what does that mean? Nothing! Grand statements, resolutions, pledges, promises are useless anyway, are just idle talking.

Speaking to the thousands protesting in Glasgow outside the UN climate summit, named COP26, Greta Thunberg called the summit a public relation event and criticized world leaders’ climate efforts.

A giant gap between greenhouse gas data nations are reporting and what they are emitting, is clouding the finally reached COP26 agreement. An analysis of emission reports from nearly 200 countries found significant differences between what nations say they are sending into the atmosphere and reality. That gap — which at its highest estimate approaches the annual emissions of China — calls into question any commitments at the UN summit.

COP26 saw a pledge to reduce methane emissions by 30 percent, which will cut global temperatures by about one tenth of a degree, pretty much the warming we’ve seen since the Paris Agreement was signed in 2015. The 30 percent methane target is too low to significantly slow warming and the largest emitters, including China, Russia, India, and Australia have not joined the effort.

Over 100 world leaders, representing 85 percent of the world’s forests, pledged to halt deforestation by end of the decade. A similar declaration in New York in 2014 saw 200 countries and civil society groups pledge to halve deforestation by 2020. Instead, it rose by 41 percent and the global tree cover decreased by 10 percent from 2001 to 2020. It is also unclear how the new agreement will be enforced or whether countries face penalties if they fail to reach their targets. Indonesia, home to the world's third-biggest rainforest, already questioned the terms of the deal. Siti Nurbaya Bakar, Indonesia's environment minister, said that "forcing Indonesia to zero deforestation in 2030 is clearly inappropriate and unfair".

Some countries that were planning to stop using coal anyway have said they are going to stop using coal. Yet, coal-fired power generation is rising again in the wake of the pandemic, both in Germany and the US. Meanwhile, China’s government has mandated an expansion in coal production to address its power supply crisis.

Most of the large coal consumers – Australia, China, the US, India and South Africa – have not joined the Glasgow coal phase-out agreement. China’s recent ban on new financing for overseas coal power is expected to axe 44 plants worldwide, but China’s domestic coal power stations continue to multiply. For the first time in 2020, China became host to over half of the world’s coal power capacity. It still has 100 gigawatts (GW) of coal power under construction, and another 160GW in the planning stages.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that promises to reduce emissions were meaningless while governments continued to invest in fossil fuels. "Promises ring hollow when the fossil fuels industry still receives trillions in subsidies," and: "We need action if commitments are to pass the credibility test.” He called the announcements in Glasgow "far from enough,” adding: "We know what must be done."

For instance: Governments should set carbon taxes, devise safety nets to protect the vulnerable from energy price rises and not only pledge but impose (implement) emission cuts. Not to forget the urgent need of educational programs to “nudge” consumer behavior away from mindless buying.

Consumers need to stop buying anything beyond the bare essentials, vacationers have to stay home or near home, lumberjacks have to put down their chainsaws and start planting, companies have to stop mining and producing, factories have to reduce their output or shut down, governments have to end subsidies which encourage more industrial activity, the religion of “economic growth” has to be abandoned.

The billionaires and multimillionaires will object to such changes. They need continuous hefty profits to bribe politicians, pay or buy the press, hire security guards, shield them from climate disasters, and setup comfortable doomsday retreats.

==========

In October global food prices shot up another 3 percent and it is expected that food prices around the world will continue to escalate dramatically, pushing millions of people in poorer countries into hunger.

Bad weather hit harvests around the world this year, freight costs soared and labor shortages have roiled the food supply chain from farms to supermarkets. An energy crisis has been an aditionnal headache, forcing vegetable greenhouses to go dark and causing a knock-on risk of bigger fertilizer bills for farmers.

I’m normally not fond of such “feel good” stories, but if retired people would preferably spend their time with learning, researching, teaching, writing, art, and similar productive activities, an immense potential of human ingenuity and creativity could be unleashed.

A nice essay, but I disagree with on sentence: “Trees need us as much as we need them.” I rather suspect that trees would do very well without us.

Not “blah, blah, blah,” but “ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.” Read this report to understand how dysfunctional, unjust, incorrigible, and criminal the system is. The movers and shakers of this world enjoy their power and don’t hide their disrespect for the rest of us. The statements at COP26 are hypocritical, confusing, and nauseating. They mock us, they show us intentionally how powerless we are. Their message is: We will make as much money out of this as possible and when things finally go downhill we will disappear onto our superyachts, private islands, and doomsday retreats in New Zealand.

Headlines from around the world:

People celebrate, as the world’s post-Covid recovery takes off.
This thanksgiving, the masks are off, the dinner is inside, and the relatives are back.

British regulators have approved the Merck drug molnupiravir for treatment of COVID-19. Molnupiravir disrupts the replication of the virus reduces the risk of hospitalization and death in some higher-risk coronavirus patients. Pfizer has released results from trials of its antiviral drug paxlovid. The trial data suggest it reduces the risk of hospitalization or death by 89 percent.

Moderna took government money and help for its Covid vaccine. Now it wants to exclude government scientists from a lucrative patent.

Recent research shows that COVID-19 can cause encephalitis, long-term neurological damage and the development of autoimmune disorders. A study conducted on rhesus monkeys showed that every test subject infected with COVID-19 formed Lewy bodies in its brain. Lewy bodies are associated with Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

Pfizer’s 2.3 billion US$ settlement in 2009 about fraudulent marketing included a record-breaking 1.3 billion criminal fine.

COP26: more than 100 nations pledge to cut methane, but not China. China’s carbon emissions set to pass pre-pandemic levels.

As the world’s largest producer of fossil fuel CO2 emissions, China has come under pressure from Western governments to bring forward its targets on peak emissions and make definite commitments to reduce its dependence on coal.

In 2019, it pumped out 28 per cent of the world’s total fossil fuel CO2 emissions, almost twice that of the USA, which was the second-largest and accounted for 14.5 per cent.

It is also the world’s largest crude steel producer and consumer, accounting for over 60 per cent of the global steel industry’s emissions.

News, insights, opinions November 2021

Lately we are told by a deluge of mainstream media pieces, that “living with COVID-19” is now the way forward. The world supposedly has entered a new phase of the pandemic in which people are adapting to the persistent presence of an endemic but usually nonlethal pathogen.

Governments abandon even the most limited COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and try to organize a seamless transition towards COVID-19 as an endemic disease. Officials declare: “There will be no more school closures, lockdowns, or curfews again.”

Schools have largely dropped the mask requirement and normal life has resumed in many cities with only some perfunctory measures in place. Nightclubs reopened and large events have returned. Children resumed face-to-face lessons and sports months ago, and people can dine in big groups and walk around outdoors without masks. Travel restrictions have also been lifted.

The pandemic was useful to increase surveillance, to tighten control over the plebs, and to secure the money flows to the rentier class (the billionaires), now it is time to move to the next phase.

The still high infection rates, deaths, and permanent health damage (long Covid) are belittled, ignored, and blacked out, as mainstream media is gearing up for “living with Covid.” Many people will like the new message, as it allows them to restart their habitual consumer life.

Finally, after securing “healthy” profits for Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca, and their fellow pharmaceutical corporations with an open ended vaccination campaign, it is also time for the health care industry to move on and declare the pandemic to be over.

Big Pharma, with a long list of lawsuits and criminal convictions (Pfizer's 2.3 billion US$ settlement in 2009 included a record-breaking 1.3 billion criminal fine, Johnson & Johnson paid 2.2 billion US$ in 2013) is rehabilitated and hailed as savior, while anti-vaxxers join the long list of ostracized dissident groups.

The calls for “ending the pandemic situation” make clear that the people in charge continue the “profits before lives” policy. The official plan is to “build back better” in the post-pandemic recovery, and it means a digital technocracy and the rekindling of a neoliberal growth-oriented market economy with “healthy profits.” Consumerism will still be necessary to appease and sedate the masses.

Living with Covid

Nearly one-quarter of a billion people have been infected by the coronavirus and the official global death toll from COVID-19 has surpassed five million people. This figure, horrific in itself, is known to be a vast under-count and the numbers of global excess deaths suggest that the true death toll stands at 16 million people, roughly equivalent to the death toll from World War I.

One Covid tracker estimates that nearly 200,000 people are dying from COVID-19 every week. In the USA more than 1,000 people on average are still dying of COVID-19 every day.

Some never discussed occurrences will make the post-pandemic word very different. As evidence mounts that even the mildest Covid infection can cause lasting organ damage (lung, heart, kidneys, liver, nervous system), millions of ailing people will strain the health care systems, well-being and life expectancy will be reduced, the social climate will be profoundly changed. For many, if not for most recovered patients it will be a life of misery.

A new scientific study on 10,024 breakthrough infections shows that vaccination does not prevent Long Covid.

The world is fast approaching the end of the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic. What has distinguished the second year has been the introduction of vaccines that have without doubt saved numerous lives. Just over half the world’s population, an astounding 3.86 billion people worldwide, has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

However, as inequity in vaccine distribution continues to plague the globe, regions in the Middle East, the African continent, and many Latin American countries have fallen woefully behind high-income nations in Europe and North America. Africa has, on average, only administered a single dose to 8.3 percent of its population.

Despite the vaccination campaigns, albeit favoring wealthier nations, the second year has been far more calamitous and deadly than the first. If we set the announcement of a PHEIC (Public Health Emergency of International Concern) by the World Health Organization on January 30, 2020, as a fixed point in the beginning of the pandemic, exactly one year later, there were 103 million reported infections and 2.35 million deaths globally.

But with three months left in the second year, already 143 million more people have contracted the virus. A small but significant number have contracted COVID-19 twice or even three times. Another 2.68 million people have died. This means that despite the existence of vaccines, more have lost their lives in 9 months than in the preceding 12.

It is important to consider these statistics, because the policy of living with the coronavirus has enabled SARS-CoV-2 to mutate and develop more virulent forms.

The emergence of the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) in the second year is the counterpoint to the policy of reopening and “living with Covid.” Hyper-transmissible, more virulent and deadly, and possessing more robust immune-evading properties, in just a few short months after debuting in India in a catastrophic surge of infections, it quickly dominated every other variant globally wreaking havoc across communities in every region of the world. As of August 24, 2021, 163 countries have reported the Delta variant has been sequenced within their borders.

Other new mutations are emerging that arouse researchers’ concerns. AY.4 has been rising in the UK over several months, accounting for 68.2 percent of sequenced SARS-CoV-2 coronaviruses in the last 28 days. The sub lineage AY.4.2, also commonly being referred to as the new “Delta Plus,” has been growing slowly, accounting for 8.5 percent in the same period. Scientists studying AY.4.2 have estimated that it is between 10 to 15 percent more transmissible than Delta.

Despite vaccinations, the situation in Europe is worse than it was the same time last year as a result of the reckless reopening policy. Last week, 1.4 million COVID-19 cases were registered across Europe, 18 percent more than the previous week. Over the same period, 20,503 deaths were recorded, a 17 percent increase. This means that 1.3 million people have officially acknowledged died from COVID-19 in Europe. And as in the US or India, the actual death toll is almost certainly far higher.

The situation is currently most dramatic in Eastern Europe. Russia and Ukraine are setting new record levels of infection and death almost daily. The three Baltic states are among the countries with the highest incidences worldwide. In Latvia, the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in a week stands at 934.5, in Estonia at 847.8, and in Lithuania at 747.

The situation is also out of control in Romania and Bulgaria, with incidences of around 500. In Romania, which has a population of around 19 million, more than 15,000 new infections were recorded on Saturday. Some 30 patients had to be transferred to neighboring Hungary because of the overload on the health care system. The situation is so dramatic that the government in Bucharest has had to take some limited measures. Masks will be compulsory throughout Romania, and larger events such as weddings and conferences will be banned in November.

One doesn’t have to be a cynic to wonder, if the next phase of the Covid pandemic (now renamed epidemic), as envisioned by the Davos clique, may be the implementation of longstanding plans for reducing the life expectancy of the lower classes in order to curb pension obligations and social spending on the elderly. In 2014, Ezekiel Emanuel, one of the leading architects of the Obama administration’s Affordable Care Act, called for the rationing of health care based on income while discouraging the use of medical screenings. Emanuel was a member of the Biden administration’s White House Coronavirus Task Force until it was dissolved in January.

COP26, another useless public relations exercise

Niels Bohr, the Nobel laureate in Physics and father of the atomic model, is quoted as saying, “Prediction is very difficult, especially if it's about the future.” Yet, the prediction that the Glasgow climate talks will fall short in any respect is easy and a deadly safe bet.

China’s President Xi Jinping doesn’t attend COP26, though China, with 1.4 billion people the most populous country in the world, is now the planet’s largest contributor to climate change, responsible for around 28 percent of CO2 emissions. Russian President Vladimir Putin also doesn’t attend, though Russia is another polluter of global importance.

US President Biden is there, but he has nothing to show for. On the last day of the Group of 20 summit, Biden told reporters that it was not inconsistent for him to urge oil producers to pump more fossil fuels while imploring countries to tackle climate change. Biden’s “Build Back Better” legislation has been reduced to a fig leaf of reformist pretense, without a single dollar of additional taxation on the wealthy.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, the planet was changing before our eyes and ”COP26 must be a turning point for people and planet.” Guterres mentioned, that extreme weather events - including powerful heat waves and devastating floods - are now the new normal. "From the ocean depths to mountain tops, from melting glaciers to relentless extreme weather events, ecosystems and communities around the globe are being devastated," said Mr Guterres.

Until now the COP26 climate negotiations in Glasgow yielded a commitment by more than 100 countries to halt and reverse forest loss by 2030. Forests have absorb roughly 15 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. A similar declaration in New York in 2014 saw 200 countries and civil society groups pledge to halve deforestation by 2020. Instead, it rose by 41 percent.

India PM Narendra Modi pledges net zero by 2070, a meaningless promise like all the other promises to be valid in 20, 30, or 50 years. National climate pledges are too weak to avoid catastrophic warming and most nations are on track to miss them anyway.

Most important: Nobody is committing to a reduction of industrial activity and an end to the “economic growth” paradigm, which would be the only effective measure.

The World Bank approves loans only under the condition, that governments push for GDP growth despite pandemic.

As electric vehicle sales are booming, China is striving to become a force in the global auto industry by selling battery-powered SUVs and luxury sedans in Western Europe.

Rather insignificant but nevertheless exemplary: To show the world that the UK is really, really serious about changing carbon emissions, the tax on domestic flights was significantly reduced ahead of COP26.

Who will tell Russia to seal oil and gas wells? Who will tell Australia and China to end coal mining? Who will tell the USA and Canada to stop fracking? Anyway, if one really dares to ask, they will make the usual meaningless promises for a reduction in 20 or more years.

As the billionaires do not stop the ruthless hunt for ever more profits while the Covid pandemic rages, they will not stop even as ecological collapse looms.

They pray for the “Midas touch,” not realizing that it will starve them to death (as the Latin poet Claudian states in his In Rufinum: "So Midas, king of Lydia, swelled at first with pride when he found he could transform everything he touched to gold; but when he beheld his food grow rigid and his drink harden into golden ice then he understood that this gift was a bane and in his loathing for gold, cursed his prayer.”
