Economists sound the alarm, because commodity prices are low and still falling. It’s not only oil and other fossil fuels. Metals and many other basic materials, wheat, cotton, all other agricultural goods, can be bought for cheap at the moment. In a sane economic system this would be good news because it means that necessary supplies which we need for living are plentiful.

But we don’t live in a sane economic system and securing corporate profits is more important than meeting the needs of the population.

The superpower relies on the petrodollar reserve currency, control of the global financial system by the big US banks, and quasi colonial exploitation via artificial low commodity prices and high prices of exported technology and services. No comments, no news round up, and no cat news this time, because there’s still much to do in the garden (weeding, pruning, transplanting, cleaning away leaves and twigs).

It is unseasonal warm, and 2015 will be even warmer than 2014, which was the warmest year ever recorded. Water scarcity could become a problem because of increased evaporation — we will see. Fortunately I live in a rainy country, but more and more places around the globe will be affected by drought, deforestation, desertification. The Gulf region could become uninhabitable in a few decades (which would at least solve the problem of Islamic terrorism funding by the Gulf potentates).

Yemen’s capital Sanaa will run out of water in a few years. Saudi Arabia has stopped agricultural production, the aquifers are empty. Gaza has no potable water, people get sick from water born diseases.

Cholera is epidemic in Iraq and has spread to neighboring Syria, Kuwait, and Bahrain. There is a risk that cholera will be turning into a region-wide epidemic, as millions of Shi’ite Muslims are due to visit Iraq in December for Arbaeen, a religious ritual marking the end of an annual mourning period for the Prophet Mohammad’s grandson Hussein.

It is a safe bet that the Middle East will see more war, more environmental devastation, more epidemic diseases, more hardship and pain, causing more people to seek a better life elsewhere.

But where will all this people in the Gulf, in Syria, Iraq, and other heat and drought stricken places go?

They will go north and they will try to enter the countries which Western media fairytales depict as the lands where milk and honey flows. EU countries will face a steadily increasing flood of refugees from drought and war devastated places and one can assume that the present flood of refugees is just the beginning.

Back to the reality of a quiet and privileged life in a small rural village in the middle of Europe. The pumpkins are rotting fast and they have to be peeled, cut in small pieces, pureed, and poured into boxes to be stored in one of the freezers. I cook and eat as much as I can but I’m weary of eating pumpkin soup day in, day out.

Today I discovered two bunches of grapes which were hidden behind leaves and only became visible as the leaves were falling. I ate them instantly and they were delicious. I also harvested a bowl of tomatoes, they are still ripping. The little hedgehog child which I shelter in the bigger greenhouse is eating a lot, which is a good sign. I hope it will survive the winter. It has build a small nest from earth and twigs by itself (very clever) which it only leaves to eat the food which I bring everyday. The hedgehog prefers cat food.

I have to stop because tomorrow I will be busy again in the garden.
